Tony
Stone, a seventh generation South African, with many years of practical business
experience in banking, economics and as the managing director of a successful
40-year-old research and publishing company, had to reinvent himself after
the company was bought out by a well-known American firm. For his
achievements in turning the company around, and achieving the Holy Grail in
finance, he was recognised with a Who’s Who 2004 Leadership Award in
Financial Management. Engaging
in his hobby as a writer, and after writing as a freelance journalist for
Media24, the Civil Engineer magazine, and other professional technical
magazines, then joining 3S Media as the editor of the Institute of Municipal
Engineering of South Africa (IMIESA) journal, IMIESA received a 2008 PICA
award from the publishing industry and a CESA award from the civil
engineering industry itself. He also edited the Inside Mining magazine. After
retiring, his endeavours led him to serving as strategist and advisor to the
president of the Gauteng National African Federation of Chambers of Commerce.
He was also a co-convenor and keynote speaker at the Africa Local Government
Economic Development Conference that was attended by delegates from Africa’s
54 member states. He
is a published author, having written two books, the most recent of which is
titled “The Anatomy of a Good Business Leader,” published in softcover ISBN
978-1-77636-594-4 and written as a comprehensive guide for MBA, MBL and MDP
post-graduate students, or any interested managers. At
the moment he produces a newsletter for a leading investment manager at a
South African bank. Tony
is also an amateur historian and statistician with a keen interest in
geopolitics and socioeconomics, which is what gave birth to The Stone
Chronicles. As a footnote: here is a photo of Tony with Nelson
Mandela. the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of South Africa, the
Rev. Ivan Abrahams, and members of the Steve Biko Foundation. The
occasion was to present a tribute to Madiba, which Tony wrote. |

any venture, leadership, and staff, are critical success factors, be it a
small, medium, or large enterprise, an NGO, a political party, or even the
government of the day. However, it must be said, given the nature of things,
and of fact, every organisation succeeds or fails because of its leadership
and staff. Modern history is full of examples. To run a business
successfully, there are ten areas in which a leader and potential leaders
need to excel. We examine each.
